How many colleges should you apply to?

some people at my school are applying to around 15-20 colleges! i think that's insane. i think 5-6 plus a backup is enough. what do you think?

I applied to 7. Most students will apply to 5 or 6. Some colleges will ask you what other colleges you've apply to so it's not good when you apply to too many.How many colleges should you apply to?
if have your sights set on one school and you're confident that you'll get accepted, then applying to a minimal number of schools (as backup) is enough. if you're not so confident, 6 seems like a safe number.
You should always apply to at least 6.
